Breaking the Rules of Art

There is a song by the well-known band named Daft Punk. A song by them has always stuck out to me and made me feel at home. The name of the song is Giorgio by Moroder. In the intro to the song, there is a sample of a man speaking named Giovanni Giorgio Moroder, but everybody calls him Giorgio.

Giorgio is accredited with a long list of influences, EDM, and house music being only a couple. His work pioneering the use of the synthesizer is what created today’s EDM music. Cher, Elton John, Daft Punk, and Led Zeppelin are only a few of the massive names in music that Giorgio has collaborated with.

In short, Giorgio is the real deal when it comes to breaking the rules.

In the sample, Giorgio begins by speaking about himself building and growing as a musician. He speaks about the creation and use of the synthesizer. Giorgio believed that the synthesizer would be the sound of the future. Later in the song though, Giorgio unleashes this line.

This has always hit me close to home. Music is such a powerful force in life. Music can comfort you in tough times or invigorate you in times of euphoria. In making music there are very few true rules or forced perspectives unless that’s how you want to work.

The rules for writing and music are similar in a few ways of how they limit the artist. With music, there is basic music theory, and for writing there is grammar. Yet, with both writing and music, there is a factor that must be accounted for in all art. If there is anything interesting about it.

An author could write with perfect grammar every single time, but he ends up reading like a textbook. The same can happen with a writer that has creative ideas, but can’t write with proper grammar.

What’s most important is having a mastery of grammar, and knowing when to break the rules and when to follow them. Masters of the craft are working at a different level than most people in the population. That’s why they’re distinguished as master of the craft.

The laws of writing can only limit the mind so much, and some people have an amazing skill of allowing the laws of writing and grammar to bend to their will. Take Stephen King, for example, after putting the first page of “Laurie,” into Grammarly.com there were interesting results.

Mr. King Scored a 93%, received 7 errors, and had a readability score of 86. This is possibly the most renowned writer of our century and his published first page looks like a first draft to Grammarly.

The thing about King is that the first page reads perfectly fine. Grammarly might be too aggressive, or I’m too simple, but there’s nothing wrong with the readability. This goes to show that every rule does not have to be followed every single time for a piece of art to make money.

There are always going to be people who don’t like King’s writing. But there seems to be a big enough market for everything. Take for example the paintings that sell for thousands of dollars that look like white space with single lines thrown about. Although the painting doesn’t seem right to you, there is a market for it. The rules that one perceives to be important become what we prefer in our art. This is why we have so many different genres of music and literature.

In essence, people can bend the rules that which seem so firm to create beauty. The rules of creativity will always be there. But to be successful in creation, we must know when not to follow the rules. Without this bending of the rules, we’ll never see another Renaissance.
