The Road Grew Strange

Sitting stiffly at the long table, Hector tried not to hear the whispered comments. It was physically impossible to shut them out, the sensitivity of his rebuilt ear too acute. “Attention — can I…

So Much Information. So Little Time.

All of those pop-up ads. All of those scrolling images that get in your way when you’re trying to read a news article or research something. I now have a better understanding of what they are and the tools that are utilized in their production and, admittedly, it’s made my head spin. I never knew there were so many platforms to see statistics and the sciences behind why consumers buy a product or service and the labor intensive amount of work that is involved in being a successful digital marketer.

There are so many platforms out there, tools that are available, and options. What is clear is that the bigger an online business gets, the necessity for paid platforms increases. Doing research is key to finding the right outlet that will work best with whatever you are marketing. Sometimes things will work. Sometimes not so much. A campaign or slogan may fall flat on the audience or stir up negative reactions, so being aware of what and how your message is delivered is probably one of the most important pathways to success. Of course there are other things, such as timing, environment and Covid 19. It seems like online marketing is thriving during lock down. People have shifted their buying power.

An example of this came from my ex-fiance, Daren, who works for McCormack Spices in the United Kingdom. He is involved in the international accounting aspects throughout Europe. He phoned me the other day and said the the company is breaking record sales of spices. Why? Everyone is forced to stay inside and forgo eating out. Take away options are expensive for many who have lost income. The solution is to cook at home. All you have to do is watch the news to see that a certain coffee recipe is trending and visit the grocery store only to find that there’s no flour or yeast because people are baking at home. So online advertisements for things that consumers will need are crucial to the success of businesses, both large and small, and we have seen the stories of certain areas of retail that are thriving despite the pandemic.

So as I sit here writing this blog, I’ve gotten about six pop-up ads for yoga wear because I was looking for some new workout clothes. I filled in a few details for one, and there it was. The automated message inviting me to buy with an immediate 15% discount. It worked. And now I am about $60.00 poorer but feel good that I’ve contributed to someone’s business and hard work to get me to purchase the product. Here’s to you, online marketers.
