Our Struggles Make Us Who We Are

Josh Feldman

With my first semester of college about to be completed, there are a few things that I would like to discuss in terms of who I am as a learner and an individual. Specifically, these topics include changes in my personal life and study strategies. Academically, I felt that high school did not prepare me for college well at all. I had to immediately change many of my study strategies because I did not learn how to study the proper way. In addition, I never had to study as much or as often as I did in high school. The reality check set in after I did not score very well on my first couple of tests. I now knew what I had to do to be successful, but that is easier said than done. It was a tremendous adjustment for me as I now have to sit down and study for many hours a week, which was something that I am not used to.

Outside of school, I had a large personal problem that has affected me in every aspect of my life. I was recently diagnosed with endogenous depression, which is something that I felt coming but never wanted to admit to myself that something is wrong with me. After being on medication for a few weeks, I am starting to get better but this change only started at the end of the semester. I struggled immensely with my studies and just being positive in general, especially with this problem in my head constantly weighing me down. I had to find a balance between taking care of myself and m schoolwork and sometimes it all was too much. But, I persevered and in the end am fairly content with how this first semester has went for me. There is a quote by Madeline L’Engle that states “maybe you have to know the darkness before you can appreciate the light”. This quote really struck me because I never truly appreciated my happiness previously in my life before this event happened. This has taught me that an individual can get through anything in life with the proper support systems. Our struggles in life define who we truly are and that is what makes every single person unique in their own way, just like every person that was in the humans of New York.
