Failure Be My Guide

I was sent this quote today. I’ve been sitting on it all day. I was angry when I first read it. No. This is the opposite of how I want to handle things. I want to think in the positive. I want to plan who I want to be. Who our company is. Forward thinking. I took a little bit of time to read it in context.

….Invert, always invert: Turn a situation or problem upside down. Look at it backward. What happens if all our plans go wrong? Where don’t we want to go, and how do you get there? Instead of looking for success, make a list of how to fail instead — through sloth, envy, resentment, self-pity, entitlement, all the mental habits of self-defeat. Avoid these qualities and you will succeed. Tell me where I’m going to die, that is, so I don’t go there.

I am uncomfortable with this until I start to unravel it. If I pick the most positive thing in my life- I think of my marriage. How did I get so lucky? How are we continuing to make it work? It started by seeing something I did NOT want. And identifying the things that led it. I started with failure as the guide. Then made a plan to avoid it.

Shoot. Game on. Failure be my guide.
