One of the biggest changes I’ve had in my mindset as a musician is asking one question before I write or play anything.

Seek attention or serve the audience?

Seek praise or serve the band?

Seek validation or serve the song?

Seek reassurance or serve my band members?

It’s a simple question, but how I answer it affects every note I play afterwards. It’s not some tactic or secret. It’s a change in posture that I believe is crucial for playing great music.

And it turns out that one answer leads to a better place than the other.
