Lost in the Land of Views and Clicks

With a media landscape of views and clicks which oftentimes leads to inaccurate information, how are we supposed to trust the information we are receiving while finding that delicate balance between quality reporting and our ease of access to information through various social medias? Well, it takes work. It takes work on the part of journalists to report responsibly and it takes work on the part of us, the consumers.

How, you might ask? Well, let’s begin with how to support quality journalism. One way is to pay with actual money rather than with just clicks and views, but to balance out the scale, sharing high quality content (via social media) also helps.

Paying for the news we consume helps journalists focus on what’s important: accurate information, rather than distributing sensationalized clickbaity headlines — which are often skewed and encourages digital illiteracy — for views & clicks with advertising as the main source of revenue, i.e. motivation behind such content.

I would also worry about the prioritization of information that isn’t actually news and doesn’t actually matter that actual news has to compete with.

This is just an additional reason we should all be supporting quality journalism through monetary compensation, or, subscriptions!

I don’t know about you, but I sure do love holding an actual paper or magazine in my hands as I take my time to absorb the information I am reading. This same slow journalism approach applies to online sources as well, ensuring the time is taken to curate in-depth and accurate information.

Here is an additional source of information regarding best practices as consumers of information

In conclusion, if we care about journalistic integrity (I know I do) then there are ways we can help raise the standards and receive accurate, in-depth reporting. We can do this through monetary compensation/subscriptions as a means of supporting these higher standards. We can also use social media platforms to share the quality information we find which also supports journalists. And of course, slow down! If I take time to receive information then I’d like journalists to take their time curating it to ensure accuracy and quality. An additional side note: maybe avoid the clickbaity things that really don’t matter?
