Former Hollywood Movie Producer King-Pin Harvey Weinstein, is currently serving 23 years in jail for sexual misconduct. Over 80 females came forward to say they were violated by Harvey, with allegations dating back to the late 1980s. The question is “Why did so many stay silent for so long?” and just how did Harvey Weinstein get his victims to stay silent

Harvey Weinstein, one of Hollywood’s biggest movie producers turned convicted rapist, was sentenced to 23 years in prison on accounts of a first-degree criminal sex act and a third degree rape (Aratani & Pilkington, 2020). It goes without saying that allegations from over 80 females who admitted to being sexually assaulted by Weinstein, ended his career just days after the first allegations in late 2017. The downfall of Harvey Weinstein ultimately led to the birth of the #metoo movement, which purpose was to raise awareness for sexual misconduct against women and encourage women to speak up if they are being used or threatened (Haynes, 2017). The birth of the movement has ultimately led to an abundance of males and females opening up about celebrities sexual assaulting them, from the likes of actor Kevin Spacey to famous rapper R. Kelly. In October 2017 Actress Rose McGowan was among the first to open up about Harvey’s unforgivable behaviour towards her in, however a year earlier she hinted at Weinstein’s sexual, hostile behaviour tweeting “Because my ex sold our movie to my rapist for distribution. #WhyWomenDontReport”. The rapist, obviously being Harvey Weinstein. Once Weinstein became aware of the females generating negative talk about him in the industry, he hired an elite private intelligence firm run by Israeli spies called Black Cube. The purpose of Black Cube was to identify potential female threats to Harvey Weinstein’s god-like reputation and have the stories silenced through intimidation or threatening their future career. Rose McGowan was befriended by various undercover agents who befriended her and exploited her by having numerous conversations recorded and sent to Weinstein (The New Yorker, 2017). After appearing on an episode of 60 Minutes in February of this year, Rose McGowan exposes both Harvey Weinstein and an undercover spy for Black Cube at the time, Seth Freedman. On the episode it is revealed that Seth befriended Rose claiming to be a news reporter and tricked Rose into revealing details about Harvey with him over the course of a 75 minute phone call interview (60 Minutes Australia, 2020).

With over 80 women admitting that Harvey Weinstein in some way sexually violated them, the question must be asked as to why they remained silent. The answer is Harvey’s status and position of power he held in Hollywood at the time. Prior to allegations against Harvey shedding light, Weinstein was one of Hollywood’s biggest and successful movie producers with his independent film studio named The Weinstein Company. The studio produced movies for highly successful and acclaimed directors, such as Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. Weinstein’s name was attached to success in Hollywood. Although a sexual predator, Harvey Weinstein wasn’t necessarily labelled as a creep or a bad guy whilst in his prime. Ex-assistant of Weinstein Zelda Perkins opened up about Harvey’s behaviour in an interview with BBC from 2017. Zelda states “He was also an extremely exciting, brilliant, stimulating person to be around, he was at the top of his game at that time… he held all the cards.” (BBC News , 2017).
