The Art of Black Panther

This week I want to review a book titled the Marvel’s Black Panther: Art of the movie. The Art of Black Panther is an art book created by the Marvel Visual Production team and published by marvel Studios. It has 240 pages and was release on February 13 2018. The book focuses on the visual aspect of creating the film Black Panther. So, every time Marvel studio release a film from their franchise, they would also release a collection series book filled with concept art created for the film. I’ve collected other marvel film art series book, but to me this book is unique because of how much work the visual department of marvel had to do for the film. Since Black Panther is the first Black Superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Franchise, the Visual department team needs to satisfy the fan with their art work. The first few pages of the book consists of opening introduction from the head of visual department of Marvel Studios Ryan Meinerding and the Director of the Film Black Panther Ryan Coogler. The introduction part of the book are words form both person regarding their view on creating the project of Black Panther. I thought the introduction paragraph by the director Ryan coogler was really well written. Just by finish reading his paragraph you could understand how important it is for him to do this project. Ryan Coogler said that he had a full attachment on working on the project because I feel like he is trying to find his identity as being an American and also as being someone who has an African ancestry. To me, it felt really meaningful that he said that because, it means that he would do his maximum effort to do justice for the film. Moving forward after the introduction of the book, are all the collection concept used for the development of the film.

I was overwhelming on the amount of concept art they did for the film and how detailed and beautiful each concept is being. For single character design they would do minimum of fifteen different design before moving to the final design. I really love the variation they did for the concept art. For example, they were a lot of variation of the Black panther suit. They are one with the Black panther having a mouth opening for his mask and also there are one with Black Panther having a different texture in his suit. By looking at these different variations for different characters, I can tell how much of creativity that had to do in order to create the final images. Prior before staring the project, visual department had to do a lot of research in order to create the world of Black Panther. Since Black Panther is a superhero based on African culture, the visual department team of marvel have to figure out how to create and design the world of Wakanda based of reference from many different existing tribes of Africa. It was fascinating to see the different African Culture inspiration for the many characters in the Black Panther film. Overall, I thought it was a good insight to understand the general design approach aspect of Black Panther. I learn about how much of reference that they need to find to optimize their design for the film. I would recommend anyone who love the film Black Panther to buy this book in order to understand the amount of workload and creativity the visual art department of Marvel had to do for the film.
