Rediscovering the Impact of Digital Spaces on Physical Reality and Health Safety

The spread of the Coronavirus has brought a new focus to the need for safe virtual spaces, while the nature of work and communication changes.

On the other hand, this concern for public health and safety has brought on a renewed interest in remote work, even in areas that were previously hesitant to embrace it.

In Japan, face-to-face meetings have traditionally been an important way to conduct business. However, now there are signs that the need to stay away from public spaces has brought upon a shift in work culture.

International companies like Slack and Zoom have provided the tools and created awareness of the need for the ability to let teams work remotely. However, corporate acceptance of such an idea has been slow, until now. It suddenly looks like this idea will take root and become reality in Japan.

Since last year, our team has been developing an app that has gotten loyal support from blind users in the U.S. Although we can’t claim to have foreseen this or even say we developed it for this specific user group, the match couldn’t be more perfect.

The core user base of blind and visually impaired people often struggle with going out and socializing. This by no means because of their ability to socialize, but because the reality is it is often difficult to arrange transportation and deal with other logistics. In other words, while there was a desire to meet people and converse, the physical impediments made it unnecessarily difficult.

In Japan, face-to-face meetings have been considered indispensable in business

On the other hand, while these blind users had access to online social networks, platforms that relied on visual media weren’t a great fit.

This is why Dabel proved to be such a great fit for these users. Dabel utilizes audio streaming without video, so people can make new friends in real-time verbal conversations. The daily act of meeting people and socializing is now possible without having to leave the house. People aren’t judged based on appearance or other content they upload, they simply converse with other users and develop deeper connections. This is the true potential of a platform that relies on voice, rather than video.

On Dabel, you can meet new people and make friends with just your voice.

Once you meet someone on Dabel, it’s easy to maintain that friendship with casual conversations whenever you feel like it. Even in a time like now, where people are afraid of the health risks in going out, you can still maintain contact with your social network with all the emotion and warmth of hearing each other’s voices. This is the true power of a platform where you talk, not type.

The current user base of Dabel is mostly blind users from the U.S. who speak English, but these users are on the cutting edge of the transformation of not only communication for fun, but also the kind of world where remote work will be the norm.
