The mysterious nature of creativity

How an insight made me reflect on the nature of ideas.

I woke up this morning with a strange word in my mind. I don’t know if it was the last word of a dream or the first word of my awakeness.
The word, floating like a jellyfish in a still empty mental space was:

This peculiar word, which I had never heard before, amused and intrigued me at the same time.

What a fantastic machine, the human brain — I thought. It can create new words as if by magic!

I was proud of this insight. For a brief moment, I was able to glimpse the mechanisms of creativity. The usual defenses were not activated. My inner critic was probably still asleep.

I started to fantasize.

Cryptoflowers is a nice word to start writing a poem — I thought. I already had the title: The Cryptoflowers of Evil. I wrote a few lines in a notebook that I always keep on my nightstand.

Suddenly other ideas flocked to my mind. I tried to write as fast as I could, not to miss even one.

…a new kind of business: send a cryptoflower to your loved one…

…a cryptoflowers gallery…

…write a definition of cryptoflower (whatever it is) for Wikipedia…

I liked the word.

I could register the domain, who knows — I said to myself.
