Where Dark Steps Lead

A poem

Those trees on the far horizon
tall, forbidding, solemn,
solid evidence of time and life, perseverance
and survival —
they whisper with sawdust tongues,
inviting us to explore their mysteries
the haunted darkness between their trunks
thick with secrets we long to know.

But don’t forget:
it is a forest,
a body of root and branch, bark and leaf.
It conjures dreams and promises wisdom,
profundities we can only imagine or guess,
while among its roots
an ancient darkness waits our footfalls.

As we walk, gazing up, eyes led to the impenetrable canopy
by deeply grooved bark, scored by years
we only move deeper into the trap
of not seeing where each step
will inevitably lead.
