The founder of Umoja, Rebecca Lolosoli, had just recovered from several beatings by some men when she made a decision to create a community for only women. The men had beaten her because in a deeply patriarchal society, she dared to speak to the women in the village about their rights. Rebecca had lived in a community where only men were allowed to discuss and make decisions in the inner circle, while the women could only chip in ideas occasionally.
